There are a lot of things I like.
I like any kind of music that has a lot of harmony singing, and bluegrass is by far the best of that group.
I like it's respect for tradition. So often in rock and roll and what passes for country music these days, once an artist reaches a certain age, they're thrown away. But just look at the respect there is for people like Ralph Stanley and the artists of his generation.
I like the accessability of the artists to the fans.
A couple of years ago, I stopped at the Tower Records in Philadelphia to pick up my monthly copy of The Door Magazine. Unbeknownst to me, later that day, Del McCoury was doing an instore appearance and would do a short set. Needless to say, my plans changed immediately.
I still had some time to kill before the show and decided to go and get something to eat and come back.
As I walked out the door and turned down Broad St, I ran into (literally!) Del McCoury. We talked for about ten minutes and found that we knew some people in common. He was as nice as could be.
Same with Ralph Stanley. We met him at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival a few years ago and he stopped and took pictures with everyone, even though his people were pulling him in about a hundred different directions.
The guys from Front Range are all known for being very good to their fans.
The truth is, out of all of the bluegrass artists I've been fortunate enough to meet or play with, only two of them had any kind of an attitude and I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt than to assume the worst. After all, they have bad days, too.
