Perhaps because it's local...and maybe because they always have a great line up...but Bluegrass music is alive and well at the Kentucky Horse Park year after year at Festival of the Bluegrass.  I've been going to Festival of the Bluegrass since it was held at Masterson Station Park back in the 80s but they never let you down with the line-up.  The jammin' after the stage closes is always superb!  If you ever have the opportunity to check this festival out...I know you will not be disappointed.  I honestly cannot pick a particular year that was best...because I have great bluegrass memories from every single one I have attended.

I have always had a wonderful time at the RockyGrass Festival in Lyons, CO. The intimate atmosphere and always-stellar line-up makes for an enjoyable experience each year. The week leading up to the festival is known as RockyGrass Academy in which one can learn tips from the masters on a particular instrument. I have had the pleasure of having Jens Kruger, Noam Pikelny, Pete Wernick, Dennis Caplinger and Rob McCoury as my banjo teachers.

The best time I ever had at a Blue Grass festival was in Screvin Ga (near Savannah) in 1978. I was stationed at Fort Stewart at the time and a carload of us went up. It was a small crowd and not only did I meet the following stars I got to talk to each one for several minutes, it was very laid back. They included Little Wendy Halcomb (she was that little pigged tailed girl that picked a banger on the Porter Wagnor Show, Ralph Stanley, And Charlie Moore of Rebel Soldier Fame. I am glad I met Charlie the most and bought a casset from him, because he only lived another year. Even enjoyed the goons going through the crowd with baseball bats checking to make sure every one had a wrist band on. God help the ones who snuck in. Anyway drove back ripped, thank god it was before mad mothers.
